Pinkie's Up! Kids Birthday Party Etiquette

If there's one thing we absolutely love to do at M&M-- its kids birthday parties. Whether we're streaming daisy chains from chandeliers or rolling balloons in glitter, beautiful parties are just what we do. However, a wonderful party is more than just cute and clever decoration. Its about the experience you give to your guests, and the memories you are making for your children. It is an incredibly lucky thing to have loved ones gather to celebrate a birthday, and many kids go without year after year. It is so important to teach your children how to be gracious and appreciative of your efforts, and be thankful of the wonderful world they live in.

Birthdays have always been a huge deal in my family-- we have several traditions that, as a mom, I am committed to passing along to my own family. One of my favorite traditions is the cake, or cakes rather. My mom, without fail, makes me a special "birthday morning cake," every year. This cake is amazingly delicious, a simple, home made chocolate cake with nutella frosting and filling, and covered in sprinkles. I can't tell you how much fun it was going to school as a child and exclaiming that I had chocolate cake for breakfast :)

In today's birthday world, Pinterest crazed parents go to the ends of the earth to make the perfect party-- from hiring real ninja turtles to turning backyards into winter wonderlands and everything in between. This is wonderful-- children have so few birthdays to really make magical, and we believe every parent should make every effort to make the day special. However, there are a few guidelines that help keep children s' parties about the children, streamline complications, and inspire gratitude and good manners early on.

Here are some great guidelines to follow to throw the perfect party for your little one:

"If you're turning 4, thats 4 guests, plus the birthday kiddo."

  • A great rule of thumb is one guest for each year of your child's age, plus one. (we throw an extra candle on the cake right? This also helps to keep the strain of the day, attention, and over stimulation to a minimum on your child.

"Do not hand out invitations in public unless you are being totally inclusive."

  • Not only does this help with the social pressures of inviting everyone (and going over budget) but keeping invitations private help to prevent hurt feelings at school/daycare. It's great to include a note about discretion in the invitation if you have a smaller guest list.

"The more adults, the merrier."

  • Having a ton of adult help at the party can truly be a blessing. Whether its wrangling a herd of preschoolers or being able to grab a volunteer for an ice run, you can never have too many helping hands at a kids party.

"Say hello at the door"

  • Your young host or hostess should greet their guests as they arrive. This doesn't mean that they cannot engage in playing with their friends right off the bat, but it does mean calling your child away from the rest to say hello to each new friend. This helps the new guest feel welcome and helps your child to understand that every guest is important at their party. Hold off on any group activities until about 20-25 minutes into the party, or when the majority have shown up. They also should learn to say "thank you" and "goodbye."

"Have a game plan"

  • Plan plenty of activities, even if you wont get to all of them. Make sure that games leave everyone feeling like a winner, and be flexible in case your child would rather simply play with their friends instead.

"Soup's on!"

  • Be clear about the food schedule (or lack thereof) so that guests and their parents can feel comfortable helping themselves to food throughout the party or waiting until everyone will be eating at once. For the younger folks, its important to have a more structured eating time in the party so that they don't feel like eating will be missing out on the fun.

"Oh goody, a goodie bag!"

  • Having goodie or treat bags is a fun birthday tradition, and something that all children look forward to. Keep in mind siblings (especially those who may be there when picking up guests) and include a treat bag for them if budget allows. A great way to incorporate more birthday love for less $$ is to make something yummy (ie sugar cookies, decorated in the party theme) and wrap them in individual bags, tied with fun ribbon.

"So.many.gifts."

  • It is truly a wonderful thing to have your child showered with birthday presents, but it is crucial that you teach them to be gracious and appreciative of every the time and money that others spent for them. If you do not want to open gifts in front of party goers (which is typically the most polite option, so that guests can see real-time joy and feel great when your child opens their present) make sure you are keeping a gift list as your child opens them later. Use the list to write thank you cards as soon as possible, even if you thanked the gift giver in person. If your child is too young to write on their own, incorporate them somehow so they understand the importance of a written thank you note. They can add drawings or stickers to the cards or envelopes, which doubles as a craft project. Yay!
Most important, enjoy the day and take a million pictures. Hug your kiddos and have fun at the party yourself. And, if you need some planning help, call on us! We're available!

Less is More

Minimalistic jewelry like simple, dainty rings, necklaces, bracelets, body chains and more have been all over our radars recently. Seen everywhere from the bodies of popular bloggers like the The Little Magpie and Kenzas to the shelves of our favorite fast-fashion retailers like Zara, H&M and Forever 21 and even high-end department stores like Bloomingdales and Barneys, it’s hard not to fall in love with this trend. Read more: http://stylecaster.com/minimalist-jewelry-trend/#ixzz3Ptdy6EOs

It's La La Lemon Season!!

Meyer Lemons are our FAVE lemon and quite possibly the new kale. Asking why? They're well known for cleansing and detoxification purposes, but also are insanely delicious in sweet and savory dishes! Lemon almond tart sound yum? How about pasta with kale and lemon garlic confit? Intrigued?? We thought you'd be... Sneak a peek at our cooking section for deets!

Arricaderci, Ombre-- Bon Jour, Ecaille!

While ultra vibrant hair and dramatic ombre ruled 2014, we’re starting to see a shift in the follicle forecast. As we step into the new year we’re beginning to see a more natural trend attached to those tresses. The leading force toward this minimal vibe: balayage, increasingly popular highlights that aim to mimic those sunkissed highlights you got as a kid. And now, piggybacking off balayage, we’re seeing another similar, albeit darker, technique that we’re sure is about to go mane-stream over the course of 2015: introducing ecaille (AKA “tortoiseshell” in French).

Seeing RED

Cant love this long red skirt trend enough! So so chic for your next date night or dinner party.

 Je t'aime!
Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue, We're loving this lookAnd you should too!

KEEP IT SPICY: Jalapeno poppers, updated...

So perfect for your Superbowl parties or hell, any party! Loving this easy peasy recipe from rachelschultz.com
Bonus: Spicy foods boost your metabolism so this is clearly a win-win ;)

Potentially Awkward: What to do when you're pregnant and your best friend isn't

whenyourfriendispregnant.jpg

Our gal over at Pregnant Chicken has some great advice for this easy fumble (superbowl pun intended) But maybe lets start with, hmm..being f*ing normal? Also, it is never, ever okay to suggest a sperm donor as an option to someone who hasn't even expressed a desire to have a child. Now is not the time to apply peer pressure *cough*

Hooray for January! We'll be making valentines before you know it!

Hittin' the old Dusty Trail: Napa Weekend

"You take a Nap-a, you don't Move to Napa!"

Even though we agreed wholeheartedly as this was being shouted to Big, I actually did move to Napa. Once...and let me tell you, it was the best decision I ever made! The Napa Valley is so chock full of amazing food, beautiful scenery, open nature, fun shopping, and amazing food. Oh wait, did I say that already? Good. Oh yeah and wine! woohoo!

Last Sunday the hubs, the kiddo and me packed into the car and drove up north to check out our old haunts, and it was super duper fun! Napa is a great escape for Mommy and Daddy, of course, but kids can actually have alot of fun too! Plan a Daytrip that you wont soon forget, and make sure to stop at these awesome places!

Because we're obsessed with food, my Napa trip might be a bit different from your Napa trip. Its just that we HAVE to go to Oxbow when we're here. We have to. Oxbow Public Market is modeled after numerous inspirations, but is like a miniature version of the San Francisco Ferry Building and an open market in Paris. We love love love oxbow and could walk around it all day. First stop is Ritual Coffee, as we are about as equally obsessed with coffee as we are food :)

Ritual Coffee is so damn good, you wont even care that you had to wait 10 minutes or paid more for coffee than you normally do at sbux-- but lemme tell you, worth it. Worth making this a ritual every weekend!

"If there Ain't no Gotts in Heaven I just might turn back around."

Um, Yup. A Gotts Burger isn't just organic sustainable deliciousness wrapped up in housemade ketchup and locally sourced pickles, no-- its an experience. An out of body experience. To sit in the wine country sunshine, sippin on an apple pie milkshake and chomping an original Gotts cheeseburger is the kind of remedy one might need in ANY situation to feel a little brighter. Run, don't walk-- if you haven't had Gotts you just haven't had a burger yet. You're welcome.

For the kiddo, we just had to stop by Three Twins, and I'm #sorrynotsorry to say that this was not the only sugary stop we were making today for this guy. Look at that anticipation!! :) <3

The dolci counter of Ca'Momi is insane. insane. de-f'in-licious. If you ahvemore time, do dinner at Ca'Momi, and order the lasagne. You and your stretch pants will thank us later.

Hubby loves to walk around the stalls and smell, poke and prod every cheese, vegetable, and meat product in the market. I love watching a chef in his element! Its pretty hot!

Say Cheeeeeeeeese! The fromage available at Oxbow will put your next dinner party on another level-- Just remember to follow the hubby's rule of thumb-- "If it stinks like shit, it's gonna taste like heaven." (This typically only applies to cheese.)

for those who love to shop: Poor House is where is at-- and you'll end up in the poor house too but who cares?? You have these mugs!

All the better to drink your ritual with :)

The spice Market is the radness-- Literally any spice you have ever dreamed of smelling or tasting is available here, and sold in measurements of your choosing. It'll bring you back to the days of those college roadtrips to Marakeesh!

Ok, thats all for now.......................Bye Napa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Safe travels, y'all <3 M&M

This week's Obsessions: All that GLITTERS is GOLD

You know what they say, she who leaves a trail of glitter is never forgotten. This week's obsession is no different. Lately, I've been loving anything gold, sparkly, and fabulous.

I am loving this Kate Spade Glitter Watch. Dress up or Dress down, this watch is perfect for any outfit. The best part, the watch is interchangeable and changing straps to a soft nude color. This watch not only comes in gold, but silver and multi-color!

I've been rocking this Kate Spade "Be Dazzling" phone case for a while. I love the silicon material and the fun glitter detail!

Add a splash of glitter on your nails with Elf's Glitter Polish found at Target!

Keep it classy with a good friend of mine, MK!

Take a spontaneous trips to New York, the city of Gold, in February! (Keep posted for that blog post.)

Last, but not least, keep those January blues away with a fresh bouquet of flowers. Although they aren't gold or dipped with glitter, these fresh tulips are the "pick me up" you need to make it through your week. They have me believing spring is around the corner. (I wish.)

change journal: Lean2015

I'm watching the sunset on this beautiful first night of the year and I'm feeling so inspired. January has always been one of my favorite months, because it seems that everyone is striving to do better, do more, build a plan, build a road map for the rest of the year. I'm caught up in this motivational space and making major plans for the year. The biggest plan, the main goal this year, is for my physical body.  This body that I'm sitting in as I write this has come down a long hard road in 27 years. We've seen it all-- underweight, overweight,  eating disorder, c-section, sex, drugs, and rock&roll. But even though there are times where I feel more like 72 than 27, I'm not. Plain and simple. And I'm tired of wasting my damned good looks in a body which needs to be treated better.which needs to look better.  Which needs to feel better. So I'm starting change journal. And it starts today. Every week, I'll report back on the lifestyle change I'm committing to, the challenges,  the rewards, the progress. I know I can Change and I know this is going to be my year.

Join me.
